- A PG that says “3 meals” should be able to show you the timings and a weekly menu on the spot; if it cannot, the food is an afterthought.
- Ask whether the kitchen cooks with RO-purified water, not just whether it serves it — it is the most useful single question on a visit.
- Eating out three times a day at roughly ₹250 a plate is more than ₹20,000 a month, which is more than the entire rent of a Three Share at Vaikuntum.
- Vaikuntum includes three veg and non-veg meals a day on a rotating weekly menu, cooked with RO water, plus a self-cooking area with induction cooktops, a microwave, utensils and fridges on every floor.
A PG with food in Bangalore can mean anything from a tiffin box left at the gate to a proper dining hall with a weekly menu. The difference decides how you eat for the next year, so it deserves more than one line on the listing. This guide covers what “with food” usually includes, the meal timings to ask about, veg versus non-veg, how to judge a kitchen in ten minutes on a visit, when to cook your own, and the maths against eating out.
What a PG with food in Bangalore usually means
In Bengaluru the phrase covers four different arrangements. Some PGs serve breakfast and dinner only, on the assumption that you eat lunch at the office. A pg with 3 meals adds lunch, which matters if you work from the room or on shifts. Mess-style buildings cook in bulk through a contractor; others have in-house cooks. And some “with food” listings are really a tie-up with a tiffin service, which can disappear when the contract does. Ask which of the four you are looking at and whether weekends are different — the quietest surprise is a kitchen that shuts on Sundays.
Meal timings, and why they matter more than the menu
Fixed service windows are normal and good; they mean the food is fresh and the hall is cleaned between sittings. At Vaikuntum Elite Co-Living, Bommanahalli, breakfast is 8–10, lunch 1–2:30 and dinner 8–10, served in the dining hall. The questions to ask about any PG’s timings: what happens if you miss a window because of a late meeting, whether lunch is served on weekdays for people working from the building, and whether the weekend schedule shifts. Food and utensils are generally not allowed in rooms — at Vaikuntum that is a ₹500 fine — so the dining hall and its hours are where you will actually eat.
PG food menu: veg vs non-veg
A good kitchen runs a rotating weekly pg food menu rather than the same dal every night, and it will show you the sheet. Three things to check on it. First, whether non-veg is included or an add-on: in many buildings “with food” means veg, with chicken or egg on a separate plan. At all three Vaikuntum branches, veg and non-veg are both inside the rent. Second, which cuisine: at Sai Ram PG in Koramangala 8th Block the in-house chefs cook North and South Indian, which matters if you are from outside Karnataka and would like a roti now and then. Third, how veg and non-veg are handled in the hall — separate counters and utensils are a sign of a kitchen that takes its vegetarians seriously.
RO water, hygiene and how to judge a PG kitchen on a visit
Most PGs will say they provide RO drinking water. Far fewer cook with it. Ask directly: “Is the rice and dal cooked with RO-purified water or tap water?” The answer separates a kitchen that cares from one that fills a can. Then look, in this order:
- Visit at a mealtime. You see the actual food, the queue and the plates, not a photo.
- The dining hall. Tables wiped, floor dry, a serving counter rather than pots on the floor.
- Who cooks. In-house chefs on the payroll are more consistent than a contractor who rotates staff.
- Storage. Fridges for raw and cooked food, covered containers, a dry store that is not next to the washing area.
- Drinking water on every floor, not just at the entrance. BBMP’s 2024 PG guidelines ask operators to provide adequate drinking water and hygienic washrooms as a condition of their trade licence, so a building that fails this basic is failing the city’s rules too.
- Ask a resident what dinner was yesterday. A specific answer means a real menu.
Vaikuntum cooks with RO-purified water at all three branches and has RO drinking water on every floor in Bommanahalli.
Self cooking PG in Bangalore: when to cook your own
Even with three meals included, there are days you will want to cook: a diet or allergy the kitchen cannot cater for, a shift that ends after dinner, the first week of homesickness, or just Maggi at midnight. That is what a self-cooking area is for, and it is the feature to look for if you search for a self cooking pg bangalore. The questions: is there a shared kitchen with induction cooktops and a microwave, are utensils provided, is there a fridge you can actually use, and where may you eat what you cook?
At Vaikuntum Bommanahalli the self-cooking area has induction cooktops, a microwave and utensils, and there are refrigerators on every floor; the Ejipura and Koramangala 8th Block branches have self-cooking areas and shared fridges too. The one rule that goes with it is the sensible one: high-power appliances such as induction stoves and heaters are not allowed in rooms (₹1,000 fine plus confiscation), so the cooking happens in the kitchen, not next to your mattress.
The maths: included meals vs eating out
Cost-of-living data for Bengaluru from Wise puts a meal at an inexpensive restaurant at roughly ₹250 and monthly groceries at roughly ₹12,000 per person. Delivery apps add their own fees on top. Put that against meals that are already in the rent:
| How you eat | Rough monthly cost | What it costs you besides money |
|---|---|---|
| Three restaurant or delivery meals a day | Roughly ₹22,000+ (₹250 × 3 × 30) | Delivery waits, inconsistent nutrition |
| Cooking for yourself from groceries | Roughly ₹12,000 in groceries | An hour or two a day, dishes, a gas or stove arrangement |
| Three included meals at Vaikuntum | ₹0 on top of rent | Fixed timings; cook occasionally in the shared kitchen |
For scale, a Three Share at Vaikuntum Bommanahalli is ₹10,000 a month, all-inclusive, and a Two Share is ₹12,500. The eating-out line alone is bigger than either. The honest comparison of a PG’s total cost — food included — is in our guide to PG hidden charges.
Six questions before you book a PG with food
- How many meals, at what times, and is the weekend different?
- Is non-veg included, and on which days?
- Is the food cooked with RO water?
- Can I see this week’s menu?
- Is there a self-cooking area with a fridge I can use?
- What is pg mess food like here — can I visit at dinner?
