Single room PG vs sharing in Bangalore: which one should you pick?

The real cost gap between a single room and 2, 3 or 4 sharing in Bengaluru, who actually needs a private room, what you give up, and a table to settle it.

Key takeaways
  • A single room costs about double a two-share bed in the same building: ₹25,000 vs ₹12,500 at Vaikuntum Bommanahalli, ₹16,000 vs ₹9,999 at Sai Ram PG, Koramangala 8th Block.
  • You need a single if you take calls all day, work nights, are moving as a couple, or are staying a year or more. Most first-job professionals do not.
  • Two-share is the middle ground: at Bommanahalli both two- and three-share rooms have an attached bath, and the three-share saves ₹2,500 a month, ₹30,000 a year.
  • The XL rooms (Single XL ₹27,000, Two Share XL ₹15,000) add a larger bed and a TV for ₹2,000–2,500 over the standard room.

A single room PG in Bangalore costs roughly double a two-share bed in the same building and about two and a half times a three-share, and for most people that is money better spent elsewhere. For a few, though, calls all day, night shifts, a partner, a long stay, a private room is the difference between living somewhere and merely sleeping there. Here is the real cost gap, who needs a single, what you give up, and a table to settle it.

The cost gap in real numbers

A 2023 Magicbricks report put national PG ranges at roughly ₹6,800–15,200 a month for single occupancy, ₹6,800–10,000 for double sharing and ₹4,800–7,700 for triple sharing. Bengaluru sits at the top of those bands, and in managed buildings the single is usually well above them. Our own rates show the shape of it.

Room typeVaikuntum Elite Co-Living, BommanahalliSai Ram PG, Koramangala 8th Block
Single₹25,000 (XL with TV ₹27,000)₹16,000
Two share₹12,500 (XL with TV ₹15,000)₹9,999
Three share₹10,000₹8,000
Four share₹8,000₹7,000
Five to seven share₹7,500 / ₹7,000 / ₹6,500—

All rates are per person per month, all-inclusive, with meals, Wi-Fi, laundry, housekeeping and hot water in the price. Over a year, the single at Bommanahalli costs ₹1,50,000 more than a two-share bed; at Sai Ram the gap is about ₹72,000. That is the number to hold in your head while you read the next section.

Who actually needs a single room PG in Bangalore

  • People on calls all day. If you work remotely or spend half your day on client calls, a roommate's alarm, phone and mother are now your colleagues' problem too. A private room is a work tool here, not a treat.
  • Night-shift workers. Sleeping from 9 am while two roommates shower, iron and leave does not work for long. A single occupancy PG lets you black out the room and the noise.
  • Couples. A couple room is a private room for two by definition. Vaikuntum Bommanahalli's couple room is the Two Share XL at ₹15,000 per person.
  • Light sleepers and early risers. If one snore keeps you up, a two-share is a gamble you take twice a year, every time a roommate changes.
  • Long stays. If you know you are here for a year or more, the single starts to behave like a small flat with the chores removed.
  • Specific needs. Medical equipment, an instrument you practise, a strict routine. A roommate can be understanding; a door is reliable.

What you give up with a private room PG

Money, obviously. But also company: the first year in a new city is when a roommate becomes the person who knows a doctor, a tailor and a cricket team, and a corridor of singles is a quiet place to be lonely. You also give up choice. Singles are the scarcest room type in the city; on NoBroker's first page of Koramangala and HSR Layout listings in October 2026, not one PG was listed as single-only, and many buildings have one or two singles against twenty shared beds. You will wait for one, or compromise on the building to get one.

2 sharing vs 3 sharing PG: the middle ground

For most people the real decision is 2 sharing vs 3 sharing. BBMP's 2024 guidelines ask for at least 70 sq ft of personal space per resident, so a three-share room should be at least about 210 sq ft; many are not, so ask the room's size and look at where the third wardrobe went. The questions that decide it: can you choose or at least meet your roommates, is the bathroom attached or down the corridor, and how often does a bed change hands. At Vaikuntum Bommanahalli, both the two- and three-share rooms have an attached bathroom with hot water, a storage bed with a 10-inch spring mattress and a large wardrobe each, and the three-share saves ₹2,500 a month, ₹30,000 a year, over the two-share. A two-share with a friend you brought along is often the best of both: privacy among people you chose, at half the price of solitude.

The XL room idea

An XL room is where you buy comfort without buying solitude. The Single XL (₹27,000) adds a larger bed and a TV for ₹2,000 over the standard single. The Two Share XL (₹15,000 per person) adds larger beds, a TV and an attached bath for ₹2,500 over the standard two-share, and doubles as the couple room. For two friends who both want to fall asleep to a match on the wall, it is the sensible upgrade: ₹5,000 a month between you, not ₹25,000 for two singles.

Whichever you pick, check these

Whether the bathroom is attached, whether the cupboard locks, what the silence hours are and how they are enforced, exactly what the rent includes, and the notice period. A single does not fix a bad building; it just gives you a nicer room inside it. Our post on the difference between a PG, a co-living and a hostel covers what else to ask.
